She was a voluptuous, illustrious beauty. Her figure marked the female trend at the time of avoiding thinness, of avoiding looking like a frail woman.
Seeing as she followed the fashion of avoiding the old female gender role of brittle physique, it comes as no surprise to learn that she was also an advocate for women’s suffrage.
Analyzing the photo, one can see a resemblance between Russel’s pose and the standard body building pose which exudes strength. She is not looking downward with unnecessary humility; she holds her head up proudly and with her outfit and pose proclaims that a woman can retain her fashionable sensibility as well as her fortitude.
